Roy Sturgeon continues to introduce others to horse riding.

Updated: May 26

If you didn't know anything about Roy Sturgeon, you should know this. He started his riding career as a jockey at sixteen years old and won his first two races. His career ended at 28 years of age after suffering an injury which would now lead to the great work that he is doing with the Flying Cross Jockey Club.

I interviewed Sturgeon a couple times and I met him in person once at Woodbine racetrack and believe me it was a thrill. Sturgeon loves the horses and the entire world of horses and riding them. I formed that impression based on our conversations and the work he continues to do within a world that is seemingly moving away from from the rawness of human interaction and the toughness of the outdoors. Speaking with Roy I can hear the passion when he speaks of his days riding on the bush tracks and the B tracks which sounded like pure excitement and adrenaline. He often speaks of the racetracks which are no longer around and for many these same tracks were the comfort and therapy to many young men and women who were trying to find their way in their early years.

It takes special dedication to own horses and have the energy to teach and encourage kids how to ride em.

If you happened to be in Lacombe Alberta and would like to look up Roy or the jockey school please use the information here.
